Water Purifier FAQ — RO vs UV vs UF, TDS & Care
Clear answers to the most common water-purifier questions in India — which technology you need, TDS, water wastage and servicing. Browse the Value Plus water purifier collection or read RO vs UV vs UF explained.
RO vs UV vs UF — which purifier do I need?
It depends on your water source. RO (Reverse Osmosis) removes dissolved salts and is best for hard or high-TDS water such as borewell or tanker supply. UV kills bacteria and viruses but doesn't remove dissolved solids — suited to municipal water that is already low in TDS. UF works without electricity and removes bacteria and cysts but not dissolved salts. Many modern purifiers combine RO+UV+UF for all-round protection.
How do I know if I need an RO purifier?
If your water comes from a borewell or tanker, tastes salty, or your area is known for hard water, you likely need RO to reduce dissolved solids. If you're on a treated municipal supply with low TDS, a UV or UF purifier may be enough. Getting your water's TDS tested is the surest way to decide.
What is TDS and what level is safe?
TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) measures dissolved minerals and salts in water, in mg/L. As a general reference, the BIS acceptable limit for drinking water is around 500 mg/L. Higher TDS often means an RO purifier is appropriate; very low TDS water may not need RO at all. A simple TDS meter or a water test can guide the choice.
Do RO purifiers waste water?
Traditional RO purifiers reject some water during purification. Many newer models improve recovery and let you collect the reject water for cleaning, mopping or gardening. If wastage is a concern, look for higher water-recovery RO models and reuse the reject water.
How often do water purifier filters need changing?
Filter and membrane life depends on usage and water quality, but purifiers generally need periodic servicing and filter replacement to keep working effectively. Follow the manufacturer's recommended service schedule, and service sooner if you notice slower flow or a change in taste.
What's the difference between UV and UF?
UV uses ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms and needs electricity; the water looks the same but is disinfected. UF (Ultrafiltration) uses a physical membrane to block bacteria and cysts and works without electricity. Neither removes dissolved salts — for that you need RO.
