AC Installation Checklist — 8 Things to Get Right
A well-installed AC cools better, runs cheaper and lasts longer than the identical model installed badly. Run this checklist on installation day.
The 8-point checklist
- 1. Indoor unit height — mounted high (7–8 ft) with a slight tilt for drainage, positioned to throw air along the room's length.
- 2. Away from heat and sun — don't place the indoor unit above heat sources or in direct afternoon sun.
- 3. Outdoor unit airflow — needs open clearance around it; a choked outdoor unit kills efficiency.
- 4. Outdoor unit shade helps — shaded, ventilated spots reduce compressor strain in 45°C summers.
- 5. Short pipe runs — keep the indoor–outdoor distance within the recommended length; long runs cost cooling.
- 6. Proper drainage — the drain pipe must slope continuously; water backing up means stains and drips later.
- 7. Correct wiring and MCB — a dedicated power line with the right breaker; add a stabilizer where voltage fluctuates.
- 8. Service access — leave room to open and clean the unit; filters need monthly attention in dusty months (see AC maintenance tips).
